    Special Topics in Sex Offender Assessment and Treatment

    These workshops will present advanced topics in the treatment and assessment of sexual offenders, specifically, common assessment tools and a standard approach in developing treatment goals.  The workshops will be presented in a seminar format with opportunities for applied practice. 

    The specific venues for the special topic seminars at the University of Alaska Anchorage have yet to be determined. Location information will be distributed prior to the seminars.

    Continuing Education
    Participants registered as a professional (not as a student) are eligible to receive continuing education (CE) credits for the completion of each workshop. BHRS is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. BHRS maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

    Workshop cancellations must be received 14 days prior to the event to receive a refund.

     

    Understanding and Managing Resistance and Deception
    with Sexual Offenders
    June 18th, 2008, 8:00am-5:00pm

    Current assessment and treatment practices of sexual abusers across the life span will be discussed, including sexual offender policy and management, as well as implications for those who come into professional contact with sexual abusers. Professionals rightfully experience considerable concern in supervising and treating this population, and this training focuses on the field’s knowledge regarding detection of truth and deception, particularly in the absence of polygraph.

    The training presenter is David Prescott, LICSW. See the brochure for more biographical information. The fee is $100, $175 for both day long trainings. Early registration is due by May 30th, 2008. Participants registered as a professional (not as a student) are eligible to receive 7.5 continuing education (CE) credits per day for the completion of the workshop.
     

    Objectives
    Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • describe recent research on recidivism and treatment effect across the life span
  • assess key areas in selecting treatment goals associated with dynamic risk factors, need, and responsivity principles
  • describe interviewing skills for all professionals, specifically linguistic considerations
  • describe and assess resistance and deception
  • recognize the truth bias
  • recognize evasive and omissive responses while managing offender objections

    Motivational Interviewing Techniques with Sexual Offenders
    June 19th, 2008, 8:00am-5:00pm

    Motivational interviewing is a client-centered, directive counseling style that promotes inner change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. This workshop provides an overview of motivational interviewing, as well as a discussion about its style and spirit. It includes discussion of relevant literature related to sexual offender treatment outcome and an overview of the extensive literature related to motivational interviewing. Participants will learn skills through interactive and enjoyable activities. Key areas include strategies for assessing ambivalence about change, developing discrepancy between a client’s current and desired states, and methods for eliciting “change talk” and self-motivating statements.

    • demonstrate interviewing skills across professions
    • explain linguistic considerations
    • demonstrate motivational interviewing techniques including the use of open questions, affirmations, reflective statements, and summaries
    • describe how to avoid the righting reflex
    • explain how to maintain the motivational interviewing mindset with difficult clients
